Flush Lights

Ceiling lights that sit close to the ceiling, for rooms where a pendant would hang too low or get in the way.

How to choose between flush and semi-flush, and how many you need, is below the collection.

When a pendant is the wrong answer

Plenty of rooms cannot take a hanging light. A hall where people carry bags past. A bedroom under a sloped ceiling. A landing at the top of the stairs. An apartment with 2.3m ceilings where anything on a drop puts a taller visitor's head in it.

Flush fittings solve that by staying tight to the ceiling. Semi-flush sit on a short stem, an inch or two down, which buys you a bit of shape and lets light wash upward as well as down. That upward spill matters more than people expect, because a ceiling that catches light makes a low room feel taller.

Flush or semi-flush?

Room Which type Notes
Hallway Flush, or semi-flush if the ceiling allows In a long hall, two smaller fittings beat one large one. Space them evenly.
Landing and stairs Flush Keep it clear of the swing of anything being carried upstairs.
Bedroom Semi-flush The upward light softens the room. Pair with bedside lamps rather than relying on it alone.
Kitchen Flush Works as general light with task lighting over the worktops doing the detail.
Sloped or coved ceiling Flush Check the fitting sits properly against the angle before ordering.
Ceilings under 2.4m Flush Anything on a drop will feel like it is in the room with you.
Ceilings 2.4m and over Either Semi-flush gives you more presence without the commitment of a pendant.

For diameter, the same rule applies as for any ceiling fitting. Add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by eight, and treat the answer as a diameter in centimetres. A 4m by 4m bedroom comes out around 64cm, though for flush fittings most people go a little smaller and use two if the room is long.

Finishes and styles

Antique brass and satin brass have dominated Irish interiors for several years and still look current. Matt black reads contemporary and behaves as a neutral where the rest of the room's metals do not agree with each other. Polished and brushed nickel suits older houses and sits naturally beside chrome.

Crystal and cut-glass semi-flush fittings are worth a look for a hall or a dining room with a low ceiling. They give you the glamour of a chandelier without the drop, which is a genuinely useful trick in a house that cannot take one.

Bathrooms

Bathroom ceiling lights are governed by rules about proximity to water, and the fitting has to be rated for the zone it goes into. The specification on each product page tells you what it is rated for. Check with your electrician before ordering rather than after.

Getting enough light

The common worry about flush fittings is that they will not be bright enough. Usually the issue is not the fitting but the plan. One central light in the middle of a room throws even, flat light and leaves the corners dead.

Layering fixes it. A flush fitting overhead for general light, then a table lamp, a floor lamp or wall lights to give the room some depth. In a long room, two flush fittings will do more than one larger one ever will.

Fitting them

Hardwired fittings should be installed by an electrician registered with Safe Electric. Flush fittings are quick work for a professional, and because they mount directly to the ceiling there is no drop to measure, which makes them the easiest category to get right.

See them lit

Ceiling fittings are hard to judge from a photograph, because the thing you are really buying is how the light lands. Our showroom in Donabate, Co. Dublin has a good part of the range up and lit.

Flush ceiling lights: your questions answered

What is the difference between flush and semi-flush?

A flush fitting sits tight against the ceiling. A semi-flush sits on a short stem an inch or two below it, which allows some light to wash upward and gives the fitting a bit more shape.

What ceiling height do I need for a semi-flush light?

Around 2.4m or more is comfortable. Below that, a flush fitting is the safer choice, because anything on a drop starts to feel like it is in the room with you.

Can I use a flush ceiling light in a bathroom?

Only if it is rated for the zone it is going into. Bathroom lighting is governed by rules about proximity to water. The specification on each product page states the rating, and your electrician will confirm what your position needs.

How many ceiling lights do I need in a hallway?

In a long hall, two smaller fittings spaced evenly beat one large one in the middle. It gives a more even spread and stops the ends going dark.

What size flush light do I need?

Add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by eight for a diameter in centimetres. A 4m by 4m room comes out around 64cm, though most people go a little smaller with flush fittings and use two in a long room.

Do flush lights give enough light?

On their own, one central fitting will light a room evenly but flatly. Add a table lamp, a floor lamp or wall lights and the room gains depth. Two fittings in a long room also work better than one larger one.
